NICKEL CHROME PLATING

We are specialists in nickel chrome plating on carbon steel as well as difficult to plate stainless steel. Micro Metal Finishing has been a leader in the nickel chrome plating field for 50 years and has been plating automotive safety components since 1960.  Nickel-chrome plating provides excellent corrosion resistance over carbon steel - typically 50 hours to red rust - while imparting unsurpassed beauty to the part.

Nickel-chrome over stainless is typically used for lightshields or exterior trim.  Corrosion resistance will pass a rigid 80 hour CASS test.

Some products we typically plate in nickel chrome are:

Chrome Parts

Seat Belt Buckles

Headrests

Tools

Iso-Fix Wires

Lightshields

MMF'S MICRO-KOTE® NICKEL-CHROME PLATING PROCESS

Micro Metal Finishing uses our Micro-Kote® process which gives extended corrosion protection to conventional nickel chrome plating.  Micro-Kote® is an additional layer of nickel that is plated on the part prior to the chromium deposit.  This layer of nickel is made up of very small particles (over 70,000 per square inch) which will "micro-crack" the resulting chromium deposit.  The cracked chromium deposit is extremely beneficial in corrosion protection because it disperses any attacking corrosion throughout the surface and does not allow it to attack in one area.

This product has been added to all our nickel chrome processing lines and is required by several automotive plating specifications such as GM4372M and GM4255M.

NICKEL-CHROME DUPLEX PLATING PROCESS

Micro Metal Finishing offers a dual nickel system - typically called duplex nickel - which is used for parts that face the most corrosive environments.  The duplex nickel system we use involves several steps.  First a nickel strike is applied which gives superior adhesion of the plating to the base metal.  Then a sulfur-free (or semi-bright) layer of nickel is applied followed by the bright layer of nickel.   Next comes a layer of Micro-Kote® which is an additional layer of nickel that is plated on the part prior to the chromium deposit.  Finally, the layer of chromium is applied:

This two layer nickel system plus our Micro-Kote® process  gives extremely strong protection in salt spray and CASS tests.  This type of plating is typically required for any nickel chrome plated exterior automotive parts.
